Bauchi State Government has announced plans to appoint village heads across the state as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen traditional institutions.

Governor Bala Mohammed made this known after a stakeholders’ engagement meeting held at the Government House in Bauchi.

The Governor said the move is aimed at promoting inclusive governance and ensuring that communities are fully involved in decisions that affect them. He emphasized that the state government remains committed to consultation and consensus-building in all major policies.

According to him, the exercise will cover all the 20 emirates in the state, following recent reforms and expansion of traditional institutions. He explained that the appointment of village heads is a critical step in strengthening grassroots leadership.

Governor Mohammed noted that district heads have already been appointed and are currently carrying out their responsibilities. He added that the next phase will focus on selecting village heads who will serve as key links between the people and the government.

He further stated that emirates have been directed to submit nominations, which will be reviewed by relevant authorities, including the Local Government Service Commission. He said the process will also involve consultations with stakeholders at the local government level to ensure fairness and broad representation.

The Governor described the process as sensitive, stressing that security and integrity would be major considerations. He warned that individuals with questionable character would not be appointed, in view of the security challenges facing some communities.

Governor Mohammed commended stakeholders for their cooperation and urged political leaders to avoid interference. He assured that all submissions would be carefully reviewed, while reiterating the importance of loyalty and discipline within the traditional leadership structure to enhance governance at the grassroots.
