Islamic Coalition Criticizes Kano Dep Governor Over Remarks On Abduljabbar’s Conviction
By Sani Adamu Hassan
The Coalition of Ahlussunnah Wal-Jama’ah in Kano State has strongly condemned recent comments made by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, suggesting that the conviction of Abduljabbar Sheikh Nasiru Kabara for blasphemy was politically motivated.
Speaking during a press conference held on Monday, 29 September 2025, at Markaz Imamul Bukhari, Rijiyar Zaki, the coalition, under the leadership of Prof. Muhammad Muslim Ibrahim, described the Deputy Governor’s remarks as “deeply troubling” and potentially harmful to public trust in the judicial process.
Gwarzo had made the controversial comments on Sunday, 28 September, at Turasul Islam Jumu’ah Mosque in Gwale Local Government Area during a Maulud ceremony organized by Mallam Bazullahi Sheikh Nasiru Kabara.
According to the coalition, the Deputy Governor’s statement not only undermines the painstaking efforts of scholars, judges, and the Shariah Court of Kano State in protecting the honour of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), but also casts aspersions on the integrity of the judiciary and its presiding judge.
“This is unbecoming of any leader entrusted with public office,” the coalition said, warning that such remarks could create suspicion among citizens about possible hidden political agendas, including plans to secure Abduljabbar’s release or implicate other scholars with similar allegations.
Reaffirming its position, the coalition stressed that Abduljabbar “openly made blasphemous statements” and was given every opportunity to defend himself before scholars across Kano State. It noted that he was provided legal representation, a fair hearing, and ample time to present evidence before the Shariah Court.
“His conviction was lawful and rooted in justice, not politics,” the coalition stated.
The group called on the Kano State Government to clarify its stance, urging it to be transparent if there are plans to release Abduljabbar despite the lack of scholarly or legal justification for his acquittal.
“We reject any attempt to politicize matters related to the sanctity and honour of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),” Prof. Ibrahim said. “Leadership must not be used to cast doubt on justice or to endanger public peace.”
The coalition concluded by appealing to all stakeholders to protect the integrity of religion, uphold respect for the judiciary, and safeguard the honour of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
