Bauchi, NEDC Support Flood-Affected PWDs With Food, Essentials

About five hundred people with special needs in twelve local government areas of Bauchi State have benefited from the distribution of relief materials from the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

The distribution exercise, aimed at assisting and improving the lives of persons with disabilities affected by flood disasters, took place at the Agency’s headquarters in Bauchi.

Speaking during the event, the Executive Secretary of the Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Brisca Jarom Aaron, said the gesture was part of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed’s commitment to improving the living standards of people with special needs across the state.

She explained that the collaboration between the Bauchi State Agency for Persons with Disabilities and the NEDC followed the assessment of the impact of the recent flood on vulnerable groups, particularly persons with disabilities who are often left behind in humanitarian interventions.

According to her, the NEDC distributed 500 cartons of spaghetti, 500 bags of rice, 200 pieces of wrapper materials, 50 cartons of groundnut oil, and 50 bags of sugar, among other essential items.

Brisca Jarom Aaron added that after consultation with management, disability stakeholders, and cluster associations, the agency decided to extend the distribution to eight additional local government areas to ensure wider coverage and inclusion.

In his remarks, the Bauchi State Head of Civil Service, Barrister Muhammad Sani Umar, commended the NEDC for its continued humanitarian support and dedication to improving the welfare of persons with disabilities.

He urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items and encouraged parents and people with special needs to enroll their children in both western and Islamic education.

Barrister Umar also called on stakeholders and community members to work collectively to address issues of street begging, out-of-school children, and street hawking among persons with disabilities.
